Parish Cemetery - Vermilion County Illinois

Cemetery Name: Parish Cemetery

Also Known As: Grape Creek Cemetery, Brookville Cemetery

Location:  Danville Township, East of Belgium

GPS Location 40.06826 -87.59456 (link to Google Map)

Description:  Parish cemetery is located in Grape Creek, which is why some refer to this cemetery as Grape Creek Cemetery. The old town of Brookville is also near here, and was also once known as Brookville Cemetery. Parish Cemetery is named for Francis Marion Parrish who came to this area from Virginia. This cemetery is old, with some burials as early as the 1830's - but there are still a few recent burials - but not many since there is not much room to expand this cemetery much more.

Pictures: I took pictures of EVERY stone in this cemetery in November 2008.

I recently came across a postcard that my grandfather send to my grandmother when he was "courting" her. The postmark was Grape Creek Illinois but it was addressed to my grandmother in Brookville, Illinois. My mom grew up in Grape Creek, my grandfather worked for the railroad and my grandmother was the postmaster for the Grape Creek post office. I have great memories. The post card is dated 1912.

My Aunt Carrie was the postmistress in GC. Spent many times there as a kid. Are we related? Who is your mom?

There is no formal plot map of this cemetery. The man that was in charge for many years was unable to read or write. The records are pretty much what families know. I have many family members buried here. It is a shame that some questions will never have answers.
