Johnson Hill Cemetery - Vermilion County Illinois

Cemetery Name: Johnson Hill Cemetery

Also Known as: Johnson Cemetery

Location:  Oakwood Township, located in Kickapoo State Park.

GPS Location 40.15820 -87.75060 (link to Google Map)

Description:  Johnson Hill Cemetery is located on Kickapoo State Park property - adjacent to Michael-Rutledge Cemetery. Sometimes both cemeteries together are called "Johnson Hill"

Pictures: I visited this cemetery twice. In February 2006, I visited this cemetery for the first time. Back then I took less quality pictures (640x480) [starting in 2007, I use 2048x1536 - resized to around 1024x768 for the website]. But I wanted to include those pictures because in July 2007, Johnson Hill Cemetery was vandalized and some stones were knocked over & damaged. So I wanted to include the pre-vandalized pictures. [UPDATE: I visited again in September 2008 and took a new round of pictures]

Pictures #1 - BEFORE Vandalism (Feb 2006): 54 pictures

Pictures #2 - AFTER Vandalism (Aug 2007): 87 pictures

Pictures #3 - Picture Update (Sept 2008): 176 pictures

Subject: signage touch up!

While I see no one other than myself has visited (or at least left a message) since last year... I will continue in my quest. I will be in the area at the end of October. I will be stopping by to see if the sign is still intact. It was this spring when I visited, which I was thankful for. I will change the solar batteries on the post light and I will touch up the sign due to abusive from the elements. I made this to last if proper maintenance is applied each year. Thanks Again!

I wanted to let you know that I did visit that cemetery again late last year to see the sign, and it looks great. I haven't had a chance to update my website here with the updated pictures, but did add the picture of the great looking sign over at findagrave here:

Excellent work! I had perused the site some years ago and now, it is definitely improved. Am trying to find a lost family member all around this area. No luck yet. I'll keep on searching. Thank you for many, many hours it has taken you to compile the data and all. Danae

Subject: Signage!

I've visited this cemetery on numerous occasions in the last few years. I'm very curious... why it's called Johnson Hill? From what I've seen, there's not one Johnson buried here!

This cemetery intrigues me! I don't know why! I visit this area a few times a year, and while I have no money to spare, I'd like to provide a service.

I'm a union carpenter, and I have a little bit of talent with my hands. I'd like, if I may to provide a new sign {hand engraved, to read... Johnson Hill...} and sign post for the entrance to the cemetery. Please advise of your approval, or not, at your convenience. Thank you!

Thank You!!!

I never heard back from anyone on this, so I did it anyways. Please visit the cemetery and view the new sign!
