Cemetery Name: Gregory Burial Plot

Also Known As: University of Illinois Quad

Location:  Cunningham Township, on the U of I grounds

GPS Location 40.10885, -88.22846 (link to Google Map)

Description:  The Gregory Burial Plot is located between Altgeld Hall & the Administration buildings next to Wright St. (just east of the intersection with John St.).

John M. Gregory died in Washington DC on October 19, 1898, and was brought back to to the University to lay is state in the rotunda of Altgeld Hall before being laid to rest in a vault in Mount Hope Cemetery. Gregory use to walk from his home on John Street to the University past this area, and his wish was to be buried on the grounds of the University. So the following November his body was exhumed from Mount Hope, and laid to rest at this new location.
