WELCOME

Vermilion County Illinois is my home county, and I have visited almost all of the cemeteries in this county.  I still have about 10 or so cemeteries which I know where they are to visit, but just need to work out a time with land owners and such to get access to the cemeteries.

Cemetery Name Note:  Johnsonville Cemetery & Thurman Cemetery.  There is a cemetery just off the road at the corner of Denmark & West Newell Road.  I have always known this as Johnsonville Cemetery, and even on the topographic map found at http://www.topozone.com/ it is called Johnsonville Cemetery.  While doing research, I have found this cemetery called Thurman, Humphrey, Steward, & Mt. Pleasant - but not Johnsonville Cemetery.

Thurman Cemetery is about a mile East of Johnsonville Cemetery (with Johnson Cemetery between the 2).  It is deep in the woods off of West Newell Road.  On the topographic map, it lists this cemetery as Thurman Cemetery, but while doing research, I have found this cemetery called Swisher Cemetery.  (note:  There are Swishers buried at both of the cemeteries, so I'm sure that is why it got that name.)

So for my website, I'm going to stick with what I have always thought the cemeteries were called, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows I might just be completely wrong here with the names.

Interactive Map - Check out the interactive map of the county.  This is done with a Google Map, and you can zoom in & out with the controls on the map.  You can click on the marker for a short description of the cemetery, or click on the link in the list next to the map to have that location shown.  I have drawn a rough outline of the county in red.  All map locations were taken by me personally by a GPS unit when I visited each cemetery (unless otherwise noted).  There are 10 cemeteries which are not on the map yet for the fact I have not visited them yet.  Those are:  (1) Dougherty Cemetery, (2) Hickman Cemetery, (3) Humrick Cemetery, (4) Ingersol Cemetery, (5) Langley Cemetery, (6) McGee Cemetery, (7) Old Collison Cemetery, (8) Pentecost Cemetery, (9) Rice Cemetery, and (10) Sandusky Cemetery (Indianola).  I know where all of these are, but but unable to access them currently.  If I'm unable to get a GPS reading soon, I will add them to my map with just "estimated" location just so I can get them added.  Also 2 defunct cemeteries are on the map with estimated locations:  (1) Jones Cemetery and (2) Newell Cemetery.  I know the estimated location of many of the other cemeteries which are no longer visible, and I will try to add those to the map also soon.

List of Cemeteries - Here is a list of all the known cemeteries in the county.  I've included a picture, GPS coordinates, Township, Historical Society number which corresponds to a list they have, and other information about each cemetery.  Also at the bottom of the list are cemeteries which have been destroyed or the location was never known.  COMING SOON - PICTURES OF STONES.  I plan on uploading all my pictures (hundreds) to the site soon.  It will be linked from the list as soon as I get that far.

Picture Page - Here you will find most of the pictures I have taken of the cemetery.  (As of Oct 17, 2006 - only the first 1,000 photo's are on-line as a "test" to make sure this process works.  Will be adding the rest soon.)

LINKS - I have collected many links.  They are all listed at the bottom of the main page.
