Books

*** NEW LINK*** - Also check out Google Books - They have a project of scanning old public doman books, and some of the ones I'm doing (PLUS MORE) they have already scanned - and is easier to read. For example the 1911 History of Vermilion County Illinois - searchable, readable on-line, or even download the PDF or plain text!

I have access to a few public domain books about this area (history, biographies, etc..), and figured I would share with everyone else. Hopefully these resources will help you with your research.

"In the United States, all books and other works published before 1923 have expired copyrights and are in the public domain." - Wikipedia article on Copyright

If you have access to other public domain books that you would like to share, let me know. If something on this site is under copyright, please let me know right away so I can remove it - since I would not like anyone to use my work against my wishes, I of course would not want to do the same to others.

The books below are mostly in Adobe Acrobat format (with a couple of indexes in plain text format). [Get Adobe Reader Free here] There are mostly scans of the books, but with Acrobat, you can even do a search in that program of the text scanned in the book (it is not 100% accurate since the reader does not always interpret what is on the page correctly, but it is as good as we have... unless someone wants to type the whole book out by hand.

Subject: Thank you!

I thank you for all your diligence and organized efforts in facilitating the historical and genealogical research of Vermilion County, Illinois.
My particular family line, the PATTON surname in this case, has been elusive for quite some time, and I still have not found anything (as yet) on your site that links with my family. However, I do so appreciate your keen sense of organization and comprehensiveness, the depth and breadth of your work on this particular website, and your obvious enthusiasm in assisting researchers as they comb through untold websites and databases to find their very own people.
Kudos to you and all your staff (presuming there is more than one person working on this site, for the excellent way in which it is maintained).
I shall revisit your website from time to time. Who knows? I might even get lucky! Again, a million thanks for your obvious skills and dedication. Well done!!
Respectfully, Sandy Goode
