My current goal: To visit every cemetery in Vermilion County, and take complete photo records of every stone.

My future goal: To visit every cemetery in all the surrounding counties and take complete photo records of every stone.

When I visit a cemetery, I try to take many extra pictures to show the area - the "overview" of the cemetery. I also take a GPS reading to get a more exact location of the cemetery. (even though it is sometimes fun trying to read old instruction to a cemetery telling me to go to the 2nd house on a road... where there is now 20 newer houses... or worse, no sign of a house at all anymore.... with a GPS reading, no matter how the landscape changes, it should always point to the cemetery)

QUESTION: WHY?

ANSWER: This site is a hobby. I did not make do this to make money or anything like that, but hopefully it will help others in their genealogy research. I enjoy getting outside & walking around, so this hobby is also used as a good excuse for me to get out and exercise. This site will also help preserve local cemeteries. With stones slowly getting hard to read because of weather, age, and possible vandals - having a digital image of them today will be helpful if the time comes that the stones are no longer readable.

QUESTION: Why do you watermark all pictures?

ANSWER: Well I don't want to see all my pictures scooped up and put on a "paid" site - or any site that viewers have to pay money to have access to them. I also don't want others to take the pictures & call them their own.

QUESTION: Why don't you label each picture with the surname? Why don't you make a master index of all your pictures?

ANSWER: Yes, there are many things that would make this site much better - like labeling each pictures with the surname, or making a master index of all the pictures. But that is stuff that takes time - a lot of time sitting behind a computer. MAYBE SOMEDAY - Currently, if the weather is nice - I'm out taking more pictures. If the weather is not nice, I'm still building this website.

QUESTION: Hey, this site has a transcript of xyz cemetery - why don't you copy it over to your site?

ANSWER: Well I don't just want to copy things to this site without permission. (just like I don't want people taking my pictures for somewhere else without proper credit.) But if I can get permission from the person who made it to also have a copy here, then YES YES YES - Anything we can get on this site to help, they better.

QUESTION: You don't have pictures of xyz cemetery yet, do you want me to take pictures for this site?

ANSWER: No - going out, walking through cemeteries, taking pictures - that is the part of this hobby that I like the best, and plan on taking my own pictures soon enough. NOW - If you have older pictures of something that is no longer there, then YES - I would love to have those pictures on this site. (for example, someone gave me a picture of Niccum Cemetery sign that was destroyed and removed many years ago - long before I started taking pictures - so that sign pictures is a GREAT addition to this site.) So older pictures of things I can no longer take pictures of myself would be very welcomed.

QUESTION: I have this list/picture/information that would be helpful to have on your site - how do I do that?

ANSWER: If it is just information, on the bottom of most pages is a "comments" area - please feel free to add information there. If you have a transcript or picture or something else that you would like to send me, e-mail it to VermilionCounty (at) coan.net - I can read just about any format of data.

QUESTION: I would like to use a picture of a stone on xyz site, can I do that?

ANSWER: Do not edit the picture to remove watermarks - and you can copy the picture for your own use (as long as you don't make money from it, and it is limited - that is don't copy the whole cemetery worth of pictures. If you would like a picture on the FindAGrave website, let me know - I've very active there. If you request a photo, I can fulfill it with the original NON-Watermarked image. If you would like a picture without a watermark for a project you are working on, I'm also happy to provide them for free. Just e-mail me with the information (what cemetery, picture NUMBER - just say the persons name and make me search through all the pictures to find it, and let me know what it is for) VermilionCounty (at) coan.net

QUESTION: Do you know where XYZ is buried at?

ANSWER: Nope. All the "indexes" that I have are up on the website, so if it is not on the website - I haven't made one yet. Try searching FindAGrave site. Try searching this site (Search option on the left).Try contacting the genealogy society. (link in the link area on the left)

I have a little half sign of a cemetery entrance that starts with John... in a arching metal bow shaped entrance. It's near by to my Grandmothers old house/barn still remains outside of Danville. I believe that there is still an Acton in the next yard over. It's got to be hjust a few miles from Danville. (I am in Colorado so can't get back there to give better directions -) Any idea of the name?

I cannot tell you how wonderful it is that you have done this. The wo9rk is tremendous, and you have done a great service to people who will never get to walk around and view these in person. Many many thanks.

Subject: Difficulties in reading the linked files

Hi
Thanks for an interesting site.
I try to access the link concerning Butler township but I keep getting error messages even though I just have downloaded the new Acrobat? The messages says that I miss a plug-in called "handler something".., do you happen to know what might be wrong?
Best regards, Rikard, Stockholm.

To: David Marrow

I may be able to help you. My father was the long time mail carrier on Danville RR #1. That included Marrow Hollow which I think is where your ancestors lived. Did your Uncle Shelby Marrow also die in a house fire at the same location as your grandparents? My father remembers the family well and knew many of them although he did not know the grandparents. If I can help you just email me at hageman@fairpoint.net.

- This site has been wonderful - I've found so much information that we've been looking for for a VERY long time. Thank you for all of your hard/enjoyable 'work.'

I did want to let you know that the site for the Hebron/Newtown Cemetery is not working.

Subject: Hard Work Pays Off

You have put in alot of time photographing which helps alot of people in their genealogies. Thank You! I was glad to hear that you could supply pictures upon request without the watermark on them. You need help to attach names and dates to the photos. Perhaps someone out there could do that to help you out. I would, but Alaska is too far away.
There is near Quaker,Verm,IN both a New and Old Hopewell Cemetery. Old Hopewell is in the middle of a field and hard to locate. Recent photos of Old Hopewell are on find-a-grave.com. Keep up the good work. Does anyone have an earlier cemetery list than 1975 for McKendree,Vermilion,IL? email me at josum053@hotmail.com
